Baptism & Holy Communion decor ideas

Seven ways to make the lunch after the service feel special: soft, meaningful, and set up while you're still at church.

A baptism or First Holy Communion is a family day: a morning service, then lunch at home, in a parish hall, a community hall or a restaurant's private room. The decor doesn't need to be big. It needs to feel calm and personal, look lovely in photos with the grandparents, and be ready when everyone walks in from church.

Here are seven ideas to mix and match. Every quote includes design, delivery, setup and takedown within 35 km of Edmonton.

1. A round backdrop with a name or "God Bless" decal

This is the anchor of most baptism setups: a round backdrop with your child's name, the date or a simple "God Bless" in gold or white lettering. It becomes the photo spot for every family group. You can book a styled round backdrop on its own, or choose our Baptism Essential package, which pairs it with a garland, the decal and a cake plinth.

2. A white, gold and greenery garland

An organic balloon garland in white, pearl and gold, with eucalyptus tucked through it, softens the backdrop and frames the cake. The Essential package includes a 10 ft garland, and the Signature package stretches it to a fuller 16 ft.

3. A cake plinth or styled cake table

At most baptism lunches the cake is the star, so give it a stage: a plinth in front of the backdrop, or a styled cake table with florals and candles. A cake plinth comes with the Essential package, and a full cake table is part of Signature.

4. A welcome sign at the door

A welcome sign with your child's name and the date greets guests and helps them find the right room in a busy hall or restaurant. Our entrance set includes a welcome sign, an easel and two pillars. Signature includes a welcome sign, and Luxe includes the full entrance set.

5. Low centrepieces for the lunch tables

Keep centrepieces low so people can talk across the table: white florals, greenery and candles in glass, perhaps with a small dove or cross. We use LED candles wherever the hall doesn't allow an open flame. Styled low centrepieces have an 8-table minimum. Signature includes 6 centrepieces and Luxe includes 10.

6. A soft arch for family photos

For a bigger celebration, add an arch behind the backdrop or at the entrance. A balloon half arch or a styled faux-floral arch both work well. Our Luxe package combines a trio backdrop and an arch with an entrance set, 10 centrepieces and a dessert table.

7. A neon sign or a dessert table to finish

A neon sign adds a soft glow behind the cake table, and costs less when added to a package. Ask us which wording we have available. If you're serving sweets, a dessert table gives the treats a proper home; it's included in Luxe.

Palette ideas

Most baptism and communion palettes start with white and add one gentle accent. Here are five that work in almost any hall.

Classic white & gold

White Ivory Gold

Timeless, and it suits any venue or church colour scheme.

Sage & ivory

Sage Ivory Eucalyptus

Fresh and natural, and lovely for spring communions.

Powder blue & silver

Powder blue White Silver

A traditional favourite for baby boys, and pretty for anyone.

Blush & pearl

Blush Pearl Rose gold

Gentle and warm. Pearl balloons add a subtle sheen.

Lilac & white

Lilac White Greenery

A softer alternative to pink or blue, beautiful with greenery.

Planning tips for the day

  • Check with your parish first. Many churches limit decor in the sanctuary, so most families decorate the reception space. If you'd like something at the church itself, ask the parish office what's allowed and when setup can happen.
  • Book the hall with setup time. We aim to be finished before guests arrive, which usually means 2 to 4 hours of access before your start time. Ask the hall when you can get in.
  • Spring is First Communion season. Most parishes celebrate First Communion in the spring, and those weekends are popular, so booking a few weeks ahead makes everything easier. Requests made less than 7 days before the event add a 15% rush fee.
  • Think about the little guests. Baptisms are full of babies and toddlers. Balloon pieces are a choking hazard for children under 8, so we place balloons out of reach wherever we can and take everything down at the end. Tell us about any latex allergies and we'll design an all-floral setup instead.
  • Celebrating outside the city? St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Beaumont and Leduc are included. Further out, including Stony Plain, Fort Saskatchewan and Camrose, a travel fee is shown in your quote.
